This was one of Kay Peterson's favorite covers because it showed the
exuberant hugging of SKPs at Rallies and everywhere else
in those days, even when they discovered an SKP in a rest area or
shopping mall parking lot they had never met before. SKPs were big on
hugging!
This letter style for the title "ESCAPEES"
was Joe Peterson's favorite and I relentlessly kidded him about it, calling it "Joe's Gypsy
Circus" lettering. Border was made of centerfold cartoons.
On this early cover, the bottom half of the cover was the NL's table of
contents (not shown).
SKPs soon took to decorating their jackets with patches,
bars for each Escapade attendance,
and hats or neck-hangers festooned with te badges of Chapters and Parks
they belonged to. Escapade first-timers had to wear red ribbons while old-timers
proudly sported blue ribbons. The SKP symbols of status and belonging always intrigued me...
