X + or -

X A sign character must immediately precede both the mantissa and the
X exponent.

X A + sign indicates that a positive sign will be used in the output to
X represent positive values and that a negative sign will represent
X negative values.

X A - sign indicates that a blank will be used in the output to
X represent positive values and that a negative sign will represent
X negative values.

X Each sign position occupies one byte of storage.

X mantissa

X The mantissa can contain the symbols:

 X 9 . V

X An actual decimal point can be represented with a period (.) while an
X assumed decimal point is represented by a V.

X Either an actual or an assumed decimal point must be present in the
X mantissa; the decimal point can be leading, embedded, or trailing.

X The mantissa can contain from 1 to 16 numeric characters.

X E

X Indicates the exponent.

X exponent

X The exponent must consist of the symbol 99.

X Other Clauses: The OCCURS, REDEFINES, RENAMES, and USAGE clauses may be
X associated with external floating-point items.

X The SIGN clause is accepted as documentation and has no effect on the
X representation of the sign.

X The SYNCHRONIZED clause is treated as documentation.

X The following clauses are invalid with external floating-point items:
