X 4.2.5.1.4 Line Sequential Organization (Workstation Only)
X In a line sequential file, each record contains a sequence of characters
X ending with a record terminator. The terminator is not counted in the
X length of the record. When records are written to the file, trailing
X blanks are removed.
X When reading the record, characters are read one at a time into the record
X area until:
- X The first record terminator is encountered. The record terminator is
X discarded and the remainder of the record is filled with spaces.
- X The entire record area is filled with characters. If the first unread
X character is the record terminator, it is discarded. Otherwise, the
X first unread character becomes the first character read by the next
X READ statement.
X Records written to line sequential files must consist of USAGE...DISPLAY
X and/or DISPLAY-1 data items. If external decimal data is defined with a
X non-separate sign, the sign must be in the preferred sign representation
X (for example, X'39' for +9 or X'79' for -9).
X For line sequential files, the native byte stream file support of the
X platform is used. Line sequential files should contain only printable
X characters and the record terminator.
X The following are not supported for line sequential files:
- X APPLY WRITE ONLY clause
- X BLOCK CONTAINS clause
- X CODE-SET clause
- X DATA RECORDS clause
- X FILE STATUS value 39 (fixed file attribute conflict)
- X LABEL RECORDS clause
- X LINAGE clause
- X OPEN I-O option
- X PADDING CHARACTER clause
- X RECORD CONTAINS 0 clause
- X RECORD CONTAINS clause (format 3)
- X RECORD DELIMITER clause
- X RECORDING MODE clause
- X RERUN clause
- X RESERVE clause
- X REVERSED phrase of OPEN statement
- X REWRITE statement
- X VALUE OF clause of file description entry
- X WRITE...AT END-OF-PAGE
- X WRITE...BEFORE ADVANCING
X For more details on line sequential files, see "Line Sequential
X Organization (Workstation Only)."
