It will be noticed that nowhere is there any reference to Dos 7.0/7.1 and, indeed, MicroSoft seems to be somewhat shy about declaring the version of Dos in use. However, apart from Dos 7.x being the logical sequel to Dos 6.x, there are references to Dos 7.x in the SETVER utility which makes the term at least kind of official. Although nowhere specifically defined, I have taken the difference between Dos 7.0 and Dos 7.1 as the provision of "Large Disk Support". Dos 7.0 will not recognize more than 2.1GB on a hard disk whereas Dos 7.1 can (see FDISK).
The following table indicates the version of Dos corresponding to the output of VER.
Win95 | Windows 95 [Version 4.00.950] | Dos 7.0 |
Win95 OSR2.5 | Windows 95 [Version 4.00.1111] | Dos 7.1 |
Win98 | Windows 98 [Version 4.10.1998] |
Win98SE | Windows 98 [Version 4.10.2222] |
